First, it was the ridiculous monkey cartoon that ran in the New York Post.
Then, it was the naming of the "Obama Fried Chicken" joint in Brownsville.
And most recently, two teens in Newark had to file a lawsuit against the police department for racial profiling using unmitigated force against them and one of their coaches.
Now this?
Last week, a middle school teacher in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn used a racial slur while disciplining students.
According to a Daily News story written by Elizabeth Lazarowitz, last December, several students alleged that Elvira Sacco, 55, a teacher at the Secondary School for Journalism on Seventh Ave., lost it when students became disruptive during a movie and launched into a tirade that included the “N-word.”
Yes the “n-word.”
An inquiry by the local Department of Education found Sacco had made "inappropriate comments" based on race and violated the department’s nondiscrimination policies, according to a letter obtained by The News.
"I did not get any notification," about the results of the inquiry, said Sacco, who declined to comment further.
DOE spokeswoman Marge Feinberg confirmed that the claims against the teacher were substantiated and said that the principal had informed Sacco of the findings.
After the incident, Sacco was sent to a reassignment center - a "rubber room" - and disciplinary action is still pending, Feinberg said.
The teacher needs to be sent to a worse place than a rubber room - in fact she needs to be sent home.Even if the students were acting like a bunch of bad apples, that's no excuse for using such language to suppress the students' unruly behavior.
If the school district doesn't step up and remove this teacher permantly from the classroom, parents and activists should protest for her dismissal.
